I haven't got any metal working equipment hence working with wood. I was trying to think of a way which didn't involve having a giant lump of wood as the lid. But I think I may well be out of luck!
I've still got to think of a way of making a front right! I'm using the rear sight off an M60.

Well I've already got a plan for the rear sight, that's not a problem...it's the front sight, I don't think it's a good idea making it out of wood, too fragile. Plus if it's made out of wood and gets shot...

@Webby: Have you got any plans for the bipod you made?

Yeh but I've got to have some way of supporting the barrel, I can't got round fiting it from the hip (unfortunately). I am talking about a Bipod, not a tripod...

Well if I get my MG42 done you could always do an Audie Murphy from the hip as long as the officers are not looking

If I type that in the right colour they will never see it

No problem about firing from the hip!

Spoiler
Regular infantry ammo allowance of 600rnds though, not 3,000 of a support gunner

Gun all screwed together, once the main side panels are done and the back (pistol grip) and front panel (with panel hole), the rest is fairly simple, I used pine on the top to make it strong enough and 2 lengths of aluminium angle to create the part where the trigger housing would be.
The barrel was a bitch to get in the right position, it has to be well jammed in to the correct position then I used epoxy around the outside of the hole to hold it there, in place.
For a cocking handle I used the valve off a car tyre, these are discarded when a new tyre is put on the wheel and fit perfectly in to the 10mm hole (this will not slide back and forth because of the limited space inside the receiver).

Will post pictures up ASAP.

Still looking for a bi pod of some description, they have Bren bipods at Battle Orders but I see no way of fitting it to the gun...

NEXT UP: Sight construction.

Aluminium lid provided by Oddball.
Much appreciated, it now makes a satisfying clunk when you close the lid, brilliant!

Photos later after I've done a little work on it.

See what you think, next job is the rear sight.

It will look a lot better painted I promise haha

If anyone attempts this LOTS AND LOTS of epoxy to secure the barrel straight.
I cannot stress this enough.

Looking good Spiers. Did you not consider using fibreglass to laminate the barrel in place? It's much stronger than epoxy and a lot easier to get to shape as well, as well as being far less brittle. You could even have it extending a few inches up the barrel sleeve, as fibreglass is really easy to drill through and then sand to shape, thus disguising what you've done.

When I want your opinion - I'll tell you what it is!

Plan for painting is basically just spray paint. At least a couple of coats so you can't see the grain in the ply.
I would like to make the join stronger, but unfortunately I've no experience with fibreglass which is why I used the epoxy.
Thanks for the positive comments anyway, I'm quite happy with the outcome so far.

Machinegun finished to a basic standard, need to get some metallic gun metal spray paint and finished off a couple of little bits up aesthetically it'd make a blind man on a galloping horse dive for cover so who cares. It'll be amazing once I've fitted the mechanism in it.

Pictures later today.
